Publisher of the Month: Melville House

As our customers know, Magers and Quinn appreciates the small, the independent, and the unique. As our customers may not know, booksellers can often determine the publisher of a book just by the look of it. We wanted to celebrate the variety of independent publishers out there, and also give customers a chance to see the visual representation of a press’s personality by displaying their books together. Thus, our Publisher of the Month series was born.

Melville House displayWe started this month with Melville House, an independent operation based in Brooklyn, NY. Since 2001, Melville House has built a world-wide reputation for its rediscovery of forgotten international writers, and for championing significant contemporary nonfiction such as the Senate Intelligence Committee Report on Torture. (Check out this article, in which they share a headline with John Oliver.)

Bookseller Aaron has long been a fan of Melville House. One of his perennial hand-sells is Mary MacLane’s I Await the Devil’s Coming, which is part of Melville House’s Neversink Library, a series dedicated to “books from around the world that have been overlooked, under appreciated, looked askance at, or foolishly ignored.”

See what Aaron has to say about MacLane’s book.

Melville House’s display will be up for another week, so come check them out before September’s featured publisher moves in!
